INSTALLATION FAQs

You may have a few questions about how to care for your new carpet. Check out these frequently asked questions below for tips on how to care for your carpet.

Q: What are those fluff balls?

A: These fluff balls are referred to as Shedding. Fluff balls that appear on your carpet or in your vacuum are remnants of loose fibers left over from the mill or store. Over time, these fluff balls will discontinue.

Q: What do I do about loose ends?

A: Loose ends, referred to as Sprouting, are tufts of fiber that appear above the carpet surface. Simply remove these by clipping them even with the carpet's surface. Do not pull out loose ends. This may permanently damage the carpet.

Q: Why does my carpet look like it changes color?

A: Color variation, referred to as Shading, occurs when light reflects off the carpet pile that has been pushed in a different direction from the rest of the fibers. This will appear as a variation in color when viewed from different angles. It is often caused by foot traffic, and is resolved by vacuuming the carpet in one direction. Shading is naturally found in both plush and saxony styles.

Q: How do I get rid of flat spots in my carpet?

A: Flat spots, referred to as Crushing, in carpet are caused by the presence of heavy objects resting in an area for long periods of time, such as the location of a sofa. To enhance the intrinsic resilience of your carpet try brushing the crushed fibers or hold a hot steam iron 6 inches or more above the indented area.

Q: Why is my carpet rippled?

A: High levels of humidity may cause your carpet to Ripple. This is usually a temporary problem that is remedied when the carpet settles itself. If Rippling persists, contact your Bedford Mills retailer.

Q: How do I get rid of Static Electricity?

A: Low levels of humidity may cause a build up of static electricity when you walk on your carpet. This can result in a small shock when you touch something metal. Synthetic fiber carpets are generally treated for static resistance. If static electricity is a problem, there are several commercial products available to help reduce the build up of a static charge.

Q: How long will my carpet retain that "new" smell?

A: Just like a brand new car, some carpets have "new" smell. This "new" smell will fade within a few days to a week's time. There are a few things you can do to help eliminate this "new" smell. Be sure to keep your home well ventilated during and up to 72 hours after installation by opening doors and windows, and by using fans to keep air circulating. Vacuuming may also help to eliminate the odor.
